We invite the entire Southern Maryland community to join us on May 31, 2014 for food, games, crafts, and other fun events to raise awareness about Down syndrome. The event will be held at Cove Point Park in Lusby, MD from 10am – 1:30pm. There will be a $2 admission fee per guest. Individuals with Down syndrome are free!
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, KS2 4DS, Inc. was able to donate over $2,000 from the 2013 Karnival:
1. A donation was made to establish a scholarship for one student with Down syndrome in the The Mason LIFE (Learning into Future Environments) Program at George Mason University. The Mason LIFE program is a four-year residential program for more than 50 students with intellectual disabilities. The students, who are between the ages of 18 and 23, complete a four year curriculum of study and experience life as college students.
2. A donation was made to the Stephen D. Mattingly II Memorial Fund (Stephen’s Fund). Stephen’s Fund was established in memory of Stephen D. Mattingly II, a loving child with Down syndrome who died in 1999 at the age of 9 after fighting a courageous battle against leukemia. Stephen’s Fund awards scholarships to students in St. Mary’s County who have actively participated in programs such as Best Buddies or Special Olympics during their years in high school.
3. KS2 4DS, Inc. will be securing the keynote speaker for the 2014 DOWN SYNDROME EDUCATION Conference which will be hosted by Fabulous with 47, a Down syndrome organization in St. Mary’s County. Down Syndrome Education Conferences provide information and practical advice to help parents and professionals provide effective education, therapy, care and support for children with Down syndrome. The comprehensive conference covers motor, cognitive, social, language, literacy and numeracy development.
